MEET THE OWNER: A brief Self-Portrait
My name is Helmut Hamm and I‘m the owner of Galerie filmposter.net.
I grew up in a small town in the centre of Western Germany. The first time I visited West-Berlin was in 1980, and I immediately knew I wanted to live here, so I transferred myself as soon as I could. In the 1980s, before the wall came down, West-Berlin was a safe haven for misfits, artists, draft evaders, and non-conformists of every color and denomination. Berlin has changed tremendously since then, but I still can‘t imagine to live anywhere else but here.
Like most other dealers in this hobby, I started out as a collector. In 1996, I eventually found my ‚true calling‘ as an international movie poster dealer. In the first years, I was a frequent traveller, attending auctions and movie poster shows in London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, San Francisco, amongst many other interesting places.
I made my first steps on ebay in 1999, and starting selling through my own website in 2001. Pretty soon I missed the personal encounters and real-world conversations that I used to enjoy so much in the early days. So I opened my first brick-and-mortar shop in 2004 in Berlin-Mitte. One year later I moved to Kreuzberg, where you can still find me today.
I have collected numerous things over the years, but original movie posters have always been my ‚One True Love‘. Several decades later, I still love what I do and I want to express my deepest gratitude to all you movie poster lovers, collectors and decorators alike, who have enabled me to stay in business all these years. Thank you so much!
